Gardner Composition Competition

Maurice Gardner photoThe American Viola Society announces the Third Biennial Maurice Gardner Composition Competition

Submission Deadline:  January 1, 2014

Award: Cash award of $1,000, and the winning composition will be performed at the Primrose International Viola Competition and Festival fromJune 12-14, 2014, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The winning composer will be given, in addition to the prize, a travel and lodging stipend of $600 to attend the performance in Las Vegas. The composer will retain all publication rights.

Competition Rules: Compositions must be original, unpublished works, and not have been commercially recorded; a maximum of 15 minutes in length; and must be for solo viola, viola and piano, or viola and electronic media. Instrumentation that uses a different accompanying instrument may be considered, but in the event that the winning composition is not for the proposed combinations performance of the work in Las Vegas cannot be guaranteed. The competition is open to composers of all ages.

Submission Guidelines: All applications should be submitted via Decision Desk. To enter go to https://app.decisiondesk.com/clients/avs2014/apply .  Entrants must submit a highly legible PDF score of their composition, along with a recording of the composition and entry fee of $50. The committee’s preference is for a live rather than MIDI realization, but either is acceptable.

Any interactive media required for the performance of the winning composition will be the responsibility of the composer. Adjudication will be anonymous, so scores and recordings must be submitted without the composer’s name visible or otherwise identifiable.  

The winning composer will be notified via email no later than March 1, 2014.
