Introducing Jocelin Pan!

What’s your name?

Jocelin Pan

Where are you from?

I was born in Overland Park, KS and lived there until I was 9 years old. My family moved to Westlake Village, CA, where I attended middle and high school.

How did you come to the viola?

I started piano at the age of 5 and violin at the age of 9. One summer my mom decided I should take a couple viola lessons and it turned out they needed a violist at a summer camp near my town. I went and performed in the orchestra on viola and ended up loving it!  I switched permanently after playing both instruments two years later.

Are you a Juilliard student?  Were you?  Or do you now work as part of the studio?

I am currently a first year masters student and I also did my undergraduate at Juilliard.

Tell us about one of your favorite performances?

Performing Grisey Vortex Temporum with AXIOM Ensemble. The rehearsal process was a really intense journey, and each member in the ensemble invested 150% of his or her energy, enthusiasm, and dedication. (There were only 6 of us!)

If you could perform any viola piece, what would it be?

Grisey Espaces Acoustique with members of Ensemble Intercontemporain. (The prologue is a viola solo and instruments get added.)

If you could play any non-viola piece, what would it be?

Mozart flute and harp concerto as the harpist.

Who made your viola and how did you get to be the one playing it?

I play on a viola made by Carleen Hutchins on loan from the Virtu Foundation.

Do you have any secret skills?

Wii golf.

You are forced by the United States Government to not practice for a day.  What do you do with yourself?

EAT!!  First I’d shop for veggies at a farmers market then cook all day long and finally feast!  Also, I love indoor cycling. I would definitely need to take a couple spinning classes to undo all the eating!
