Introducing Yi-Fang Huang!

What’s your name?

Yi-Fang Huang (黃亦芳). 芳 means fragrant.

Where are you from?

I was born in Taipei, Taiwan. I came to New York in 1995 and only recently decided to settle down in New York.

How did you come to the viola?

All the students in special music school in Taiwan were required to study two instruments starting in third grade. One of the teachers assigned me to play viola because I had big hands.

Are you a Juilliard student?  Were you?  Or do you now work as part of the studio?

I got my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in piano performance at Juilliard, with the passion of collaborating with other people. My biggest blessing was meeting Heidi Castleman the year after I graduated. She continues to be my daily inspiration after 11 years.

I am now the ACHT Studio Repertoire Coach and Artistic Administrator, and viola teaching assistant to Heidi Castleman in the Juilliard Pre-College Division.

Tell us about one of your favorite performances?

The Orion Quartet’s performance on Mendelssohn A minor string quartet in 92nd Y.  It was passionate and poetic. I was very moved.

If you could perform any viola piece, what would it be?

Brahms C minor Piano quartet with Sergei Rachmaninoff on Piano, Yehudi Menuhin on Violin, Jacqueline du Pré on Cello and me on Viola. Hahahaha.. Dreams can take us anywhere.

If you could play any non-viola piece, what would it be?

I would love to conduct Beethoven’s 9th symphony – I know this doesn’t really answer the question…

Who made your viola and how did you get to be the one playing it?

I have had my viola for four years. It belongs to Heidi Castleman.  It was made in 1994 by Robert McCluskie.

Do you have any secret skills?

I won several first prizes in “story telling” between first grade and fifth grade.

You are forced by the United States Government to not practice for a day.  What do you do with yourself?

Strolling, cooking and having good laughs with friends and family.

Do you have a website?

Orford Collaborative Piano Program in conjunction with the North American Viola Society:
