Daniel WangWhere are you from?

Born in Lake Jackson, Texas (near Houston).

My whole family moved to Taipei, Taiwan when I was 8.

Are you a current Rice student? If not, what is your association with Rice?

I am currently a Master’s student at Rice.

Why did you choose to play viola?

High School orchestra needed violists.

Where and with whom have you previously studied, and who is your current teacher?

My current teacher is James Dunham. I previously studied at Indiana University.

What or whom are your most important musical influences?

My family and friends.

What are your favorite viola pieces and why?

Brahms Sonatas.

Ideally where would you like to be in 10 years’ time?

Happy and healthy. In a good orchestra.

What do you like about Rice and the Shepherd School of Music?

Great faculty. Generous Scholarship. Great orchestral program.

Who are your favorite violists and why?

My former teacher, Alan de Veritch is my favorite violist. He was old-school and inspiring. He played with so much love and passion.

What was one of your best musical experiences?

Playing under Fabio Luisi at PMF and Eschenbach at SHMF.

Who is the maker of your instrument and bow?

My bow is by John Greenwood (in San Francisco).

Best awkward stand-partner/ orchestra/ audition experience?

I’ve accidentally cursed (out loud) in an audition before.

If you didn’t play the viola, what instrument would you play?

Trumpet or Horn.
